Our heroines

If the heroine of this story was Kathryn James this would be a lovely end but heroines of this story sat in the third row of the church on grooms side, though in reality Emmy felt closer to Kathryn her own cousin. She took in all the beauty of the day and made sure to take active mental notes so she could write back to her mother in full detail. The ceremony was traditional, nothing to go into great detail about. Kathryn and Nicholas had five attendants on both side. Kathryn didn't have any sisters so her cousins and two friends schools stood to her side wearing matching crimson dresses, to complement the autumn colors and holding a smaller bouquet of white roses much like Kathryn's. Nicholas had Ethan Foster, Caleb James and three other friends standing next to him wearing their finest morning suits in a very traditional manor with tails.

After the wedding Victoria Danford untraditionally threw a luncheon for the couple with the family and close friends. Even though it was just a luncheon it was a very formal meal with multiple courses. In very modern fashion Victoria served French cuisine that had become popular to serve all over Europe and the finest families in America. The newlyweds stayed through the meal then took off to train station. Kathryn told Emmy that they would go to New York than take a cruise line over to Italy and they planned to stay there at least till spring. Kathryn had never been to Italy and gushed over everything she wanted to see while they were there. Emmy was happy for Kathryn but was a little jealous as she had never been anywhere and wished she could be going to Europe. Once the couple left the party started to break up but Victoria insisted that the Cromwell girls stay around. She felt guilty that they spent so little time together after all they were family. Emmy rolled her eyes at the idea of family obligation.

"I can stay if you like?" Brandon said seeing Emmy rolling her eyes.
"Oh no Mrs. James you are too kind."
" It is no problem I want to be useful to you."
            "Thank you Mrs. James."

Emmy took a look around the room and did not see Caleb who she really wanted to see.

"Are you all right?" Brandon asked noticing Emmy looked distracted.
"Yes, fine I was just wondering where your brother is?"
"He told me he had to go back to his mother's house to get some work done. Work on his sister's wedding day can you imagine?"
            "He must be very busy."
Brandon could tell Emmy was still in love with Caleb just in the tone of her voice.

"Yes his business keeps him quite occupied. Excuse me, Miss Emmy, I see Mrs. James waiving at me, she might want to leave."
"Of course it has been a long day."

Mrs. James did not really waive him over but he had to walk away. He could not see why Emmy still loved his brother when he has been nothing but cold to her since he left Pine Haven. Brandon had done everything he could think of to show Emmy how much he cared but she only had eyes for Caleb. That Monday Brandon went to the Ambassador to make plans to go back to England. But for today he left making his apologies to the hostess and Mrs. James but said nothing to Emmy.

Laurel did not have a grand time at the luncheon either. Ethan Foster kept his distance, she tried to talk to him but he kept getting flustered. They used to talk for hours together now though she could not think of what to say leading to some awkward silent moments. Then he left the party shortly after Nicholas and Kathryn left. She wanted to leave then too and hated that there was family obligation to stay because Aunt Victoria felt guilty.

The party was hardly a success for our heroines and with that in mind they would never have expect the following events. However without these events the story would not exist.

The next day the Dumonts and Cromwell girls went to church as usual. When they arrived they saw Ethan Foster outside pacing in a nervous habit. Ethan was proclaimed Methodist so the fact he was outside of Congregational church was odd. As he greeted the party he asked if he could sit next to them. Laurel mad no objections but acted coldly towards him. Aunt Iris made sure Laurel and Ethan sat next to each other by pulling Emmy to her side Laurel rolled her eyes at this apparent set up. Then after church Aunt Iris eagerly invited Ethan to lunch and he eagerly accepted but Laurel showed no emotion. The lunch well, Mr. Dumont and Ethan talked continuously and when Ethan left Mr. Dumont patted him on the back and told him he was welcomed back at anytime. Ethan was happy to accept the invitation and Laurel was just cordial to this idea.

When Emmy and Laure were alone she questioned her sister's behavior.

"Why were you so cold to Mr. Foster? It is a good thing Mr. Dumont spoke so much to him for you barely said two words to him."
            "Yes I did."
"Hello and goodbye do not count. Do you not care for him?"
            "It is not about that?"
"Then what is it? Honestly Laurel, I do not understand you?"
"How could you understand, the world is not one of your fairy tales," Laurel tone was so harsh it cut at Emmy.
"Is it about his supposed engagement?"
"What?" Laurel whipped around to Emmy.
"I know about Sally Lawrence, but I don't believe it."
            "Who?"
"Sally Lawrence. Caleb told me about her before he left."
"Why were you discussing Mr. Foster."
            "It just slipped Laurel."
            "What slipped?"

"I was telling Caleb that couldn't court anyone till you were engaged and I accidently mentioned how we thought you were going to get engaged to Mr. Foster. He then told me that Mr. Foster was engaged to Sally Lawrence. But I never believed that it was your Mr. Foster he is far too good of a man to be engaged to one woman and act the way he did to you, I told Caleb it must be another Mr. Foster."

"You had no right discussing my life with anyone."
"I know Laurel, it was accident."
"You are so foolish Emmy," then Laurel stormed off to her room.

She acted mad in front of Emmy but when she got her room she could not even make it to her bed she just crumbled on the floor crying hysterically. She was so ill she excused herself from dinner. Aunt Iris sent a tray up to her but she didn't touch it. She just fell into her bed in her dress that she had been wearing all day and cried till she fell asleep.

"Poor Laurel, I wonder what could have happened?" Aunt Iris asked.
Emmy shrugged not looking out of her book. It ate at her the fact that she had let it slip that Mr. Foster was engaged. The way Laurel reacted it was apparent she knew nothing about it. Though Laurel didn't know about the engagement the woman that she first saw with Ethan now haunted her since. Now it all made sense and it plagued Laurel's heart.

Laurel stayed in bed the next two days.

"Perhaps I should write your mother tell what has happened."
"No aunt you can't do that, if you do mother will insist on us coming home and I have barely said two words to Caleb James since he came and Julia told me he plans to go to their dinner party Thursday night if I can get a chance to talk to him I know things will be alright."
"I don't see why you care so much about him I do not favor him as much as I would have thought, he is cold and uncaring, nothing like his brother."
"Aunt you don't understand. He is not usually like this, when I met him he was so wonderful."
"Well I am going to call for a doctor at least and if he says that it is best for you two to return home then you will. I will not risk Laurel's health for your idealism."
"Yes aunt," Emmy lowered her head as her aunt walked out of the front parlor."

In many ways Emmy thought herself grown up but she could see in moments when she put her thoughts above others she still had some growing up to do. Laurel would never act this way, she knew, Laurel would be packing them up right now and not worry about some dinner party.

The doctor came within an hour of Aunt Iris sending for him. As Emmy paced the floor of the front parlor a note came for her from Brandon.

Dear Miss Emmy,

I write to let you know that I am off to London, the ambassador has some business for me to attend to on his behalf. I leave tomorrow for New York and then in two weeks I leave for Liverpool, I am sorry I will not be able to attend Mr. and Mrs. Danford's dinner party. If I am not back by the time you leave Boston may your life bring you desire.

Yours faithfully,
B. James

Emmy could hardly believe her eyes with Kathryn and now Brandon gone she barely had any true friends in Boston. She wanted to write him quickly but as soon as she had finished his letter the doctor and Aunt Iris walked in.

"Is she alright doctor?" Emmy asked.
"There is nothing really wrong with her besides lack of food these last few days. She seems to be running a slight fever but nothing that rest and cold compacts would not calm down."
"Do you think she should go back home?" Emmy asked prepared to face whatever he said she would do it without hesitation.
"No, no. A trip back home would probably agitate her more."
            "Yes doctor."
"Thank you Doctor Clark, I will show you out," Aunt Iris said leading him to the front door. "I am going to have the maids prepare cold towels for Laurel to make sure they never run out," Aunt Iris said when she came back in the room, "Please Emmy write to you mother before the evening post goes out."
"Aunt, I am sorry for being so self centered. I do want what is best for Laurel."
"I know Emmy. It is a great bond sisters always looking out for each other."

Kathryn's Wedding

Kathryn had already told Emmy that Caleb would not be able to come until the week of the wedding so Emmy was surprised that Caleb did not arrive until Thursday when the wedding was on Saturday. He arrived late in the afternoon giving him little time to prepare for the rehearsal and the dinner that followed. When Emmy first saw Caleb she wanted to shout his name with all her heart but she could barely think of what to say. She had thought about this moment over and over again but all her wishful conversations did not go the way she hope. At first he did not come right up to her and hug her. He kept his distance from her and when he first saw her he just coldly nodded to her.

"Men are so fickle aren't they," Julia said when she saw the exchange.
"Yes it is good your father does not buy stock in a men's heart or your inheritance would be on a yoyo," Emmy gave her a polite smile.
"I agree a man's heart jumps around till they find the right one."

Emmy saw Aunt Iris waive her over.

"Well then I am glad, cousin, you have so many suitors one is more than likely to decide you are the right one. Excuse me, Mrs. Dumont want me."

Emmy walked over to her aunt.

            "Thank you."
"For what?" Apparently Aunt Iris had not noticed the looks Julia and Emmy were giving each other.
"Never mind, what do you need?"
"Laurel insisted on coming but I have not seen her since the receiving line, have you?"
            "No why?"
"Mr. Foster has just been introduced to me. I told him how I was connected to the wedding party and at the mention of her name his face lightened up. He asked after the entire family but I could tell he only wanted information only on Laurel. I tried to point her out but I could not find her."
            "Well where is he?"
"Over there, Mrs. James wanted to speak to some of the wedding party."
"You think they should they should be reunited here?"
"I cannot think of a reason why not?"
"Perhaps a scene should happen, I would hate to take this moment away from Miss James."
"Laurel causing a scene is hard to believe."
"Indeed but Laurel has been acting so abnormal lately I do not know what will happen here."

No matter what Emmy and Aunt Iris thought they could not prevent the following. Laurel had gotten away from her hiding space, which had been talking to some of Kathryn's cousins. She headed towards the dessert table where there little cakes sets up. At that time Mrs. James had released the wedding party and Ethan too had headed to the dessert table.

            "Miss Cromwell."
            "Mr. Foster."
            "What brings you here?"
            "My cousin's wedding."
"Oh yes how foolish. I just didn't know you were in Boston."
"I am staying with Mrs. Dumont."
"Yes I just met her, she said she knew the bride and groom through you and your sister. I am silly for not putting two and two together. It is nice to see you again."
"It is nice to see you," he was about to walk away but then she said "I liked the book and I want to send you my thanks."
At first he smiled but then he got anxious. "You need not thank me."
"You are wrong," Laurel recognized his flustered tone but tried to talk pleasantly "It was beautiful and so kind for you to think of me."
"Any friend would do the same."
"Well I would thank any friend."
"Excuse me Miss Cromwell I see Nicholas needs me."
"Yes you must no ignore the groom."

Laurel watched him dart across the room and begin speaking Nicholas. She did not know why he seemed so restless, he seemed at first very happy to see her but then his tone changed when she brought up the book. She did not know what she said or what he could have said. She wished she had said more to him but she could not think of what to say.

"Miss Cromwell there you are," Mrs. James said, "I am so glad you and your sister were able to come. I do hope you would play something for us after dinner."
            "I would be happy to."
"Wonderful you are so talented," Mrs. James looked closely at Laurel. "Miss Cromwell are you feeling all right? You look pale."
"No I am fine," but then Laurel could feel herself get light headed.
"Miss Cromwell" the voice spun around her. "Brandon!" Mrs. James called him as he was the closest.

He dashed over barely catching Laurel as she fainted into his arms. She was out long enough to draw attention to herself but not long enough to have the room gathered around her.

"Laurel? Laurel? Are you all right?" Emmy asked.
            "Yes, what happened?"
"You fainted Miss Cromwell," Mrs. James said  concerned.
"I did?" I was just feeling light headed and then I don't remember."
"Come with me Miss Cromwell," Brandon took her arm. "Let us get you some fresh air."
"Mr. James we are so grateful you were there to catch her," Aunt Iris said following them to the outer veranda.
"It is nothing Mrs. Dumont, Mrs. James was smart to call me when she saw Miss Cromwell get dizzy."
"No Mr. James you are a true sign of chivalry."
"Thank you Miss Emmy," Brandon smiled at her.
"Mr. James would you mind calling out motor coach for us."
            "I can do that Aunt."
"No need Miss Emmy, I do not mind."
"But you have done so much."
"I am happy to be of service."

Brandon walked away, leaving the three some alone.

            "Laurel, what happened?"
"Nothing, I guess I felt a little claustrophobic, the dinner partied here are so different here than Pine Haven, more people and less space."
"Laurel you have never been claustrophobic before."
"I told you it is different."
"Are you sure you are all right Laurel?"
"Yes Aunt, I just needed fresh air, I am feeling better just being outside. I think the dressing maid pulled my corset too tight."
"Oh my, I shall have to talk about that with her."
"No do not do that I would not want to trouble her."
            "You are too kind Laurel."

Laurel did not want to tell anyone that she had spoken to Ethan Foster or the fact that the idea of him made her faint. This knowledge of it would send Emmy into a romantic tizzy and Laurel have none that. She had to push down her desires at least until after the wedding after that he would not come into her life. It should not be that hard it was Thursday and the wedding was Saturday. Perhaps she could fake an illness that would make her unable to attend the wedding. However if she faked a sickness she knew her aunt would grow worried and perhaps write her mother who would insist on them coming back to Pine Haven. Yes being in Pine Haven would mean she would be far away from Ethan but she did not want that. Every time she saw him on her walks she did not want him to see her but at the same moment she wanted to be right next to him. She had never felt this way before and wondered if this is how Emmy felt every time she swooned over boys. So she had to go the wedding that was apparent, but hse had to be stronger than this.

Friday passed uneventfully, Mrs. James threw a little dinner in Kathryn's honor. Mrs. James insisted that it end early to make sure the wedding party slept well. Truth be told no one slept very well. Kathryn woke up several time to make sure she had not over slept and she got up walk to the closet and looked her dress. They had found it last spring in one of the best shop in New York that imported directly from Paris. It was a beautiful cream white silk with lace cuff on the sleeves, lace around the neck and some subtle beading in the bust line and skirt that flowed into at least two foot train. Her veil came with its own tiara that fell half the way of the train of the dress and had the same beaded pattern along the edge. It would all be glamorous and while Kathryn longed for a quiet ceremony she loved this dress and felt like a princess when she stepped into it. Her mother told her face glowed when she first tried it on in that New York shop. She felt her face glow every time she looked at the dress. Looking at the dress now she could not wait till Nicholas saw her in it tomorrow.

            "Miss," a voice startled her.
Kathryn flinched then turned to see her petite maid "Bea, you startled me."
"I am sorry miss, I saw the light under the door and I was just making sure things were all right."
"Yes Bea, things are wonderful. It is a pretty dress isn't it"
"Yes Miss. You will be a princess in it."
            "Thank you Bea."
            "Do you need anything Miss?"
"No Bea, you go back to bed, tomorrow is going to be a long day and mother will run you raged if you are not will rested."
"Yes Miss, you need your sleep too, we would not want you falling asleep at your own wedding."
            "I won't Bea, I am too excited."
"Yes Miss, good night Miss. The future Mrs. Nicholas Danford."

The sound of her new name sent a thrill up her spine. She walked back to her bed and fell asleep till Bea woke up for good. The James house buzzed starting at sunrise. Mrs. James made sure everyone ate a full breakfast especially Kathryn. She was not going to have Kathryn gouge on food at the luncheon making her look wild beast on the biggest day of her life. Kathryn was then tugged into a corset. Kathryn could tell Bea was ordered to pull the strings extra tight, she could also tell that these orders made Bea uncomfortable as Kathryn winced. She took her last deep breath of the day and told Bea as happily as she could that it was all right. She tried to laugh it off that beauty was pain.

The church was done to the tops filled with the fragrance of yellow and orange color trumpet lilies that made the air smell sweet for miles around and were the perfect color for autumn. Mrs. James thought lilies would be fragrant but Kathryn wanted lilies more than anything. They were no in season anymore, so they had to be specially grown for the occasion. No expense was spared and Kathryn used the fact that her mother wanted to prove to all of Boston that her daughter was worthy of the Danford name as leverage to get any lavish touch she wanted. Though the church was filled with yellow and orange lilies Kathryn just carried a simple bouquet of white roses that were the same shade of the cream that match her dress.

Everyone was taken by her beauty as she made her grand appearance. Brandon was at her side holding her tenderly as they walked down the aisle but Kathryn felt as if she was floating on a cloud. After she saw Nicholas at the altar waiting for her the rest of the ceremony was in a haze thought she wanted to capture every detail it felt to her as if she was in a dream.

Changes are happening

The party would not have to wait a week to see each other again. After church on Sunday Kathryn threw an impromptu party of dinner and cards. She invited the Cromwell sisters, Brandon, Nicholas and Julia. She also invited some of Nicholas' friends George Manfred and Leonard Hopefelt in order to even out the party. She said she invited Ethan Foster but he told her that he was previously engaged. Also Mr. and Mrs. Dumont could not attend as they had dinner plans but eagerly encouraged the girls to go on their own.

"How odd that Mr. Foster would not wish to see us," Emmy said when Laurel and her were alone.
"Kathryn said he had other plans."
"Surely plans he could get out of for such dear friends as us, well you Laurel. He must not have known we were part of the party."
"Do you not regard him highly Laurel?"

But before Emmy could get an answer Laurel walked away.

Emmy was able to get Kathryn a lone to inquire after Mr. Foster.

"Kathryn, do you know Mr. Foster very well."
"A little, he does not seem to socialize like other men of his fashion. He is Nicholas' dear friend though they seem so different but Nicholas and Mr. Danford always speaks highly of him so I take that as a good recommendation. Why? How do you know him?"
"He came to visit us for awhile before you came to see us, it was just for a few weeks but I felt Laurel and him had an attachment but we have seen no word from him since he left. Also a few days before your brother left Pine Haven, he mentioned that a Ethan Foster was engaged to a Sally Lawrence. I say 'a' Ethan Foster because I cannot believe it would be Laurel's Ethan Foster."
"As far I know I think Laurel and Mr. Foster would be a fine match if his aunt would ever allow him to marry. But I know nothing of any Sally Lawrence connected with him but he says so little when he is around me and men talk so little of their love lives but I will keep my ears on alert if I hear anything."
"Oh thank you Kathryn, you must not mention this to Laurel I would not wish her to know anything till we are absolutely certain."
"Of course not," Kathryn changed her tone to more of a somber one "I am glad you pulled me aside I received word from my brother he will not be able to come to Boston until the week before the wedding. I wish he would come sooner but he says he cannot."
"Kathryn you are so kind to tell me privately about this but I am not concerned."
"You're not?" she sounded a bit surprised.
"Do not get me wrong as much I would like to see him Aunt Iris has taught me some valuable lessons when it comes to relationships."
Kathryn kissed her on both cheeks then pulled her in for a hug."Miss Emmy you must know I so long to call you my sister."
            "And I you."

Brandon over heard the last part of their conversation and knew then that Emmy Cromwell was still very much attached to his brother and that nothing had changed in Emmy's heart. Emmy was confused of why Caleb stayed away from her, he did not write her since he left Pine Haven. She told herself that his emotions were too strong that he could not handle himself around her. He was being a gentleman but separating himself from her before he crossed the line of impropriety. Emmy tried not to let her confusion and worrisome show as the night went on.

Fortunately for Emmy, Kathryn spent no more time discussing Caleb as Nicholas and Julia were next to arrive. As soon as Julia arrive the mood in the house changed. Julia pretended to be surprised to see her cousins again after short time apart. After the last summer with Julia, Emmy no longer bought her enthusiasm as genuine. It did seem to Emmy, Julia did seem sincerely happy even if she was not truly happy to see her cousins. Occasionally Emmy noticed that Julia would play with her necklace, taking the pedant in fingers and moving back and forth over the chain. When she did this she had a endearing look it looked as if she was guarding a little secret.

After dinner Laurel took to the piano and played some soft music, any one would think that Laurel took to the piano because of her strong love of music but she mostly loved the solitary it allowed. Most of the dinner was full of small talk and Laurel hated small talk. Also her dinner partner, George Manfred, jabbered on about all the important people he knew and Laurel could care less of the name dropping he did. Kathryn, Nicholas, Leonard Hopefelt and Julia were playing a game of bridge. Kathryn initially invited Emmy to play but Emmy had to admit she never learned that game and did not want to waste their time having to teach her. Kathryn gave her one of her charming smiles and told Emmy that she should come over for some lessons. Emmy was thankful to Kathryn but knew Kathryn was far too busy to teach her cards. Instead, Emmy found a book on the shelf that looked interesting and nestled into a corner in the couch. Every once and awhile Emmy would look over hear Mr. Manfred talking to Brandon. Mr. Manfred had discovered they knew some of the same people and had pulled Brandon aside to discuss them. Emmy looked over at Brandon, her had tried to be polite but it was obvious he was very bored. When Brandon noticed Emmy looking at him he would give her a joking smile. He was so different here, Emmy thought, in Pine Haven he was quiet and reserved and when Caleb was there he seemed almost hostile. At dinner he was very attentive to her and they had a lovely conversation about books he recommend Emmy to read. Emmy had found one of the books on the shelf and it is why she pulled it aside.

"Miss Emmy," Mrs. James caught her silently at Brandon "I do hope you reading is not a sign of boredom."
"Oh no Mrs. James I am not bored at all, I enjoy reading," Emmy said cordially.
"Well it is a good occupation of the mind."
"I think so." Then Mrs. James sat down next to Emmy and Emmy closed her book realizing this conversation would be awhile.

"Oh that is a great book," Mrs. James said but before Emmy could respond she said "I am sorry to keep you from it but you must all this old woman to be selfish, you don't always get a moment to have a long moment to have long conversation and I so want to get to know you better. Kathryn and Brandon had your attention at the teat that I hardly get to know the woman my daughter talked about so profusely. I know a lot about the Danford family they are one of the best families in Boston but I know so little about the Cromwells."

Emmy took a deep breath. She thought about the truth her father dying a penniless book publisher, her mother force to sale all their valuables to pay off his debts, and then moving to Pine Haven to live by the charity of their Grandmother. What would Laurel say if Emmy told Mrs. James the truth, a truth Laurel wanted to bury away.

"My father trained to be a lawyer, that is where he met my uncle, but my grandfather got sick so my father took over his publishing company."
"That must be where your love of books come from."
"Yes my father loved to read. He always encouraged Laurel and I have to read. Unfortunately he died before my younger sister was old enough to get his encouragement. But we continue on with his perseverance."
"Oh you have a younger sister?"
"Yes Gloria is almost twelve. She wanted to come to Boston with Laurel and I but mother thought she was too young."
"Oh I wish you mother had come I would like to meet her. I remember when Fiona Danford was presented into society she made the papers up and down the east coast."
            "Yes my mother told me."
"But then she disappeared almost and I remember nothing about the wedding to your father."

Emmy took another deep breathing, how could she explain that her parents had eloped. Emmy knew it was not something people talked about. She used to think it was romantic but Laurel corrected her and told her it was a mark of shame.

"Mother and father wanted a quiet wedding."
"Kathryn wanted a quiet ceremony too but when great families come together Mrs. Danford and myself thought a lavish affair would only be appropriate. I am surprised Mrs. Danford allowed your mother to have a quiet ceremony."

Emmy took another deep breath as her eyes nervously searched the room.

"Mother are you making Miss Emmy uncomfortable?" Kathryn asked, she had sneaked up on the conversation. Now all the eyes of the party were on them.
"No, Miss James, we were just talking. Mrs. James wanted to get to know me better, she was asking me about my mother."
            "Oh Mrs. Cromwell is divine."
"Yes I was telling Miss Emmy I remember where her mother was presented how she made all the papers up and down the east coast."
"Then she asked about my father." Emmy looked purposefully at Laurel who understood the look right away.
"Emmy, I am not feeling very well do you mind if we go home," Laurel asked pretending to look ill.
"Oh I am sorry Mrs. James we should head home."
"May I escort you Miss Cromwell and Miss Emmy," Brandon stood up.
"That would be nice," Emmy said.

It did not take long for them to get back to the Dumont home. Laurel went inside but Emmy stayed on the stoop to thank Brandon for the ride.

"Miss Emmy, what was Mrs. James asking you about?"
"I told you my mother and father."
"Is that why you looked nervous and Laurel felt sick."
            "What?"
"I know your look Miss Emmy, you had at it once at the tea, you had it a few times in Pine Haven. You have it whenever you look as if you don't know what to say. I want to save you but Mr. Manfred hardly me to say anything."
"Thank you for wanting to save me but really Mrs. James was just asking me about my mother and father."

Brandon could sense her tone had changed.

"Miss Emmy do not get upset, I was not trying to offend you. I was just making sure my step mother was behaving herself she likes to get a little nosey."

Emmy lightened her tone. "I am sorry Mr. James you have always been so kind to me and I get so defensive."
"Defensive about what?" Brandon was not thinking and put his hand gently on her arm.
"Laurel would not be happy, so you must not tell her what I am about to tell you. My mother and father eloped because my grandparents never approved of him, and then he died penniless. We now live at the generosity of my grandmother." Then she lowered her gaze "oh Laurel you must not tell Laurel I told you all that, no one knows outside the family."
"Of course Miss Emmy your family's secret is safe with me." Brandon tilted her chin up so he could look into her eyes. "I promise."
"Thank you Mr. James, I know.

The door then swung open and Brandon stepped back quickly.

"Oh Mr. James, what are you doing out here?" Aunt Iris asked.
"He was making sure Laurel and I get home all right Aunt Iris," Emmy said trying to hide her blush. She could not help it but she felt a little something when Brandon touched her chin.
"Yes Laurel came in five minutes ago, I got worried when you did not follow her."
"I was confirming our meal Mrs. Dumont," Brandon said.
"Oh it is Wednesday at seven. Now Emmy come in before you get a chill.
            "Yes Aunt Iris."
"See you Wednesday Mr. James," Aunt Iris said before closing the door.

Brandon did not even have time to say good night before the door was shut.

"Emmy," Aunt Iris snapped "How could you stand outside talking alone to a man do you know what the neighbors might think if they saw such a thing."
            "What do you mean?"
"A girl standing alone with a gentleman could be quite the scandal."
"Mr. James and I a scandal?"
"He is not married or family, you are still young and innocent but you standing with a man could give bad implications."
"Oh Aunt, he is far too old for anyone to think we are suitors and besides he looks at me as if I were his sister."
"Then why did he back away so quickly."
"Believe me Aunt Iris if I thought anything wrong was going to happen I would have come in right away. He is a good friend that is all."
"Just be careful Emmy, you are now out in society and I would not want to see you destroy the good reputation you have."
"Yes Aunt Iris," Emmy was standing on the stair case two or three steps above Mrs. Dumont so she could lean a bit and kiss her forehead to wish her aunt a good night.

The week passed by. The dinner with Mr. James went off without a hitch and Mrs. Dumont was Mr. Dumont and Mr. James did get along. Brandon wrote in his thank you note that he found Mr. Dumont of exceeding intelligent and a good conversationalist. Emmy giggled at this part as far as she could see Mr. James and Mr. Dumont hardly said two sentences to each other, maybe talked more when they shared brandy together. But Mrs. Dumont was happy Brandon found the evening a success. Mrs. Dumont watched Mr. James and saw the way he looked at Emmy the way he acted towards her, the way he seemed to notice only her when she was in the room, and Mrs. Dumont knew it Brandon saw Emmy more than a younger friend. No matter what Emmy said or thought.

While Mrs. Dumont and Emmy were wrapped up in making calls Laurel found excuses to always be in attendance. She would tell her sister and aunt that she was calling on her friend. Some of the time that was true most of the time Laurel wanted to break free of the mindless tasks and the endless small talk but instead she would go on long walks. She would try to avoid the infamous address of 126 Marlborough street but it was hard for her not to go by Ethan's home. It was the only chance she had to catch a glimpse of him. For weeks he had not accepted any of Kathryn's invites, he never went to the opera, or to charity events that Aunt Iris took them to. He was always so focused, Laurel had seen no more of that woman that plagued her memory at the way they laughed, he just carried his brief case and a book under his arm. Laurel was very careful to never walk on the same side of the street as he and when she did see him she looked away as to not be noticed.

If you did not know Laurel and Emmy before their trip to Boston you would think Laurel was the silly romantic one and Emmy was the sensible one. But Boston seemed to have changed the girls. Emmy fell favorably into society with her aunt guiding the way and Laurel was one hiding away in her own world. Soon three weeks had passed since the girls arrive in Boston and it was almost time for Kathryn and Nicholas' wedding.

Brandon's Heart

Kathryn James once her mother was well from her summer flu came back to Boston in a surge to get all the plans for her wedding done. How she wished Nicholas and her could have a quiet ceremony, maybe out in the count but her mother and mother in law would not allow it. "The fine James and Danford family are marrying and it is to an event to make society talk," was how it was explained to Kathryn. Since her return to Boston it felt like from sun up to sun down all she did was think about her wedding. She had so many calls to do, dinners to attend, and many teas to sit at she barely saw Nicholas. Though he still walked her home from church every Sunday but it wasn't the same. Charles Danford insisted that Nicholas be more active in the business that he could no longer flit around on the outskirts of it. Kathryn did encourage Nicholas in that way nevertheless she could not wait till they would have their evenings together. The Danfords had bought them a nice little home on Marlborough street for them to live once they came back from their honeymoon till Nicholas took over the Danford name. When Kathryn was not planning their wedding she was working with designers to get the house all read for them. So usually by the time Sunday came around they were both too tied to express more than a few words to each other.

When she received Emmy's note of her coming to Boston, she cherished the thought, she had such a lovely time in Pine Haven away from all the hustle and bustle that Boston had and she could feel that she and Emmy may perhaps be true friends.  She knew Emmy would bring Pine Haven back to her even if she could not go back to Pine Haven herself. She was also glad she would finally meet Mrs. Dumont. Mrs. Dumont sat on the top ring of Boston Society, and Kathryn had heard wonderful stories about Mrs. Dumont's society's meeting that she longed to be in there. With marrying a Danford she would have the name to fit into that society but having a personal connection with the Dumont family would qualify her as a belonging. So she made sure to respond quickly to Emmy and to have the best of the best prepared when they came. Kathryn had almost completely forgotten that Brandon was to come over for tea that day as well. She did not fret though as she knew how delighted Brandon would be to see the girl he looked at as a new sister. So she kept their meeting a new surprise.

"My dear brother, you will not guess who is in town and will be joining is for teas," she said as he walked into the room.
"The Queen of England?" Brandon smiled.
            "No."
            "Then who?"
            "Miss Emmy Cromwell."
            "What?" he said rather stunned.
"Are you not happy to see your new sister?"
"I am thrilled," he said trying to hide his real thoughts.
            "I knew you would be."
            "What brings her to Boston?"
"She and her sister are visiting their mother's dearest friend who they call Aunt Iris but it is really Mrs. Dumont."
"Dumont, how in the world do they know them."
"I do not know, but we shall ask over tea. That is not the point, Mrs. Dumont is as the top of Boston's society and meeting her and if she likes me that will get me into their little club. Wouldn't that be wonderful. I will prove that I am worthy to all of Boston that this little Connecticut girl is worthy of the Danford name, whatever they might think."
"So you are just using Miss Emmy," Brandon sounded very protective.
"Of course not, I love Miss Emmy, she was such delight in Pine Haven, but I must use a connection."
"My sweet Kathryn, only you would have a heart of gold and still use it to move up in the this world," he smiled his big brother smile her.

Then they heard a knock at the door and before the butler announced their presence Kathryn said "Now be nice Brandon, none of your little side comments." He nodded to his command.

"Mrs. Dumont and Miss Emmy," the Butler announced them into the room.
"Thank you Mr. Larsen can you let my mother know our guest are here."
            "Yes Miss James."

At first they were formal as Emmy introduced Aunt Iris to Kathryn and Brandon. She was pleasantly surprised and all too happy to see Brandon there. He asked after her health and how everyone at home was doing, she reported everyone was fine. Then Kathryn asked about Laurel's where about and hoped to see her soon. Once all the polite formalities were exchanged the formalities were dropped and the girls talked as if they had never been a part and how glad they were to see each other. Mrs. Dumont chimed in about how all Emmy talked about was "Miss James this and Miss James that." Emmy blushed a bit at the way Aunt Iris talked about her.

Before they could get too far along in conversation Mrs. James entered and they were back in their formal habits while Kathryn introduced her mother to Mrs. Dumont and Miss Emmy. They stayed in their formality longer with Mrs. James the room. She had an old century style about her with hair pulled tightly into a twist, her dress had a high collar and her dress had a high collar and her skirt was a little wider than the new fashion. Though she was wearing slightly older fashion she was highly eloquent and the formality of the conversation seemed to fit her better.

"Well Miss Emmy you are just as charming as my daughter said you weren't."

Emmy blushed again no one ever described her as charming "Thank you Mrs. James. My sister Laurel is the charming one in our family, I owe most of my looks to your daughter she gave me a fine make over when she was in Pine Haven."
"My daughter might be a good artist but I must say she was already working with a fine canvas." Mrs. James noticed the way Brandon was looking at Miss Emmy. "Wouldn't you agree Brandon?"
"I have always thought Miss Emmy ever so humble in her appearance. Though I am glad your color has come back, you were rather pale when I left."
"Pale, why were you sick?" Mrs. James asked.

Emmy did not know how to answer and her eyes showed it.

"Not sick," Brandon spoke up before Emmy stumbled over her answer "I was say maybe just a little tired from all the adventures of the summer."
            "Yes just tired."

Emmy gave Brandon one of her sweet smiles that told him she was thankful for the save.

"Well, then I do hope Boston does not wear you out," Mrs. James said.
"I will make sure to keep her well rested. I would not wish her to look ill on Miss James' big day," Aunt Iris stepped in "Miss Emmy, is still new in society, you know how tiresome your coming out season can be. It is hard not to be caught up in all the excitement."
"Oh yes I think I attended twenty balls the year I was presented."
"You must have been quite the debutant," Mrs. Dumont said.
"I had my fair share of society," Mrs. James smiled.

The women did enjoy most of the conversation going over the details Miss James' wedding and the new home. She promised Emmy a tour if she would be here still after the wedding. Emmy hoped that they would be in town but could not promise.

"Oh I am sorry the way we carry on, you must be bored."
            "Not at all Mrs. Dumont."
"I will try to even out the party next time brother so you will not be alone," Kathryn said.
"It is all right Kathryn, I am pleased you did not keep Miss Emmy all to yourself."
"I will be lucky once society is introduced to her that she will have any time for me at all."

Emmy blushed again at the thought of society wanting her.

"Mrs. Dumont does have me on a busy schedule to get me to meet more people but I fear I am not as I am not graceful in new crowds."

Mrs. Dumont and Mrs. James were busily talking and did not hear this conversation.

"I seem to recall your first ball Miss Emmy you had all the confidence in the world, you flattered everyone in the room even that Mrs. Taylor," Brandon said quietly enough so really only Emmy could hear him.
"That was Pine Haven Mr. James nothing like Boston. I don't know how I shall get along."
"Any time you need refuge Miss Emmy you must come here," Kathryn said.
"Are you sure it seems you have so much on your hands now I would not want to distract you."
"No come, I will be happy for the distraction how I wish Nicholas and I were getting married tomorrow and not next month so we could put all this craziness behind me."
"Yes Miss Emmy come here if my sister is too busy I shall entertain you."
            "You are much too kind."

Brandon looked at his pocket watch "I fear I must get going though, the ambassador is meeting with the governor the evening and I must attend."

Aunt Iris looked at the clock "Oh my it is much later than I thought, oh how time has flown by Emmy, Mr. Dumont will be home for dinner and we must be home. I am sure Laurel will be worried about us."
"If you are going uphill let me escort you home."
"Thank you Mr. James that will be so kind," Mrs. Dumont applied.

After the party broke up, Kathryn turned to her mother and said "Isn't Miss Emmy perfect for Caleb."
            "Yes she is a delight."
"And with the Dumonts having no heir I am sure they will be generous with the Cromwell girls after all Emmy told me they call her Aunt Iris."
"I am sure they will be, however I don't think we should push her on Caleb as I feel your other brother may want her hand."
            "Who?"
"You only have two brothers dear Kathryn, who do you think?"
"Brandon? Oh no you must be teasing, he looks at Emmy as if she were his own sister."
"I have seen the way Brandon adores you, your whole life and it looks nothing like the way he looks at Miss Emmy. She almost looks like that Martha girl," but then she quieted herself when she realized what she was saying."
            "Who?"
            "Nothing important."
"It is absolutely madness to think of Brandon falling for Miss Emmy she is far too young."
"Men have fallen young women throughout time. Look at your father and I, we had about the same age gap as Brandon and Miss Emmy and we had a very fine marriage."
"If he does love Emmy as you say he does. I feel very sorry for him as her heart is set on Caleb, and has been since the day he arrived, the day he saved her in the rain."
"You never know a girl could change her mind, she looked charmed with Brandon."
"Oh mother do not go foolish with ideas. Miss Emmy wants love and passion, Brandon is too reserved to show that side."
"People do silly things when they are in love, you never know Brandon could surprise us all."
"I still think you are being ridiculous."

Fortunately for Brandon no one else suspected him of being anymore affectionate than an older brother would be. He was also fortunate to have a late evening meeting so he was able to escort Emmy and Mrs. Dumont home. Mrs. Dumont found Brandon to be thoughtful and very intelligent and knew Mr. Dumont would find him good company as well he was current outnumbered in the house and invited him to dinner whenever he was available. He had some plans over the next couple nights but would be free on Wednesday of the next week. They all took delight in the arrangement and Emmy seemed particularly pleased what they seemed to have it all settled. Brandon would never hope that Emmy could care for him the same way her cared for her. He was nevertheless happy to see she had looked more like the way she had when they met.

Heartbroken

After that Caleb seemed distant and with any warning he left by the end of the week. Julia cared little that in doing what she did she broke off her cousin's chances of happiness. No one knew the facts, not even his lovely sister but Caleb James was not the big successful business but a few months ago it had gone sour and Caleb had sadly never learned how to manage his money properly. He still had his livings of the Upper Eastside, a few good suits, and a loyal butler who kept up the appearance that everything was fine but things were not well. Caleb was desperate for money. When he came to Danford Hall he thought he could marry one of the girls, out in this country side no one knew of his disaster. At first he believed Laurel was would be the one after his heart but she seemed cold to him the minute he walked in the door. But the middle daughter, Emmy, was full of spirit, and much more of a delight to be around than any one he had ever met. She was young that was true but with that youth she had not been taught to be a proper woman, the women Caleb usually found to be a bore. But she also had a great love of books and could keep up with him in intellectual conversations and the outer improvements Kathryn had helped with were just an extra addition. He found it to be a perfect match, she being related to the Danford family he was certain she had wealth at least enough to keep him in the life style he was comfortable in. But then to learn she was penniless not even to have a dowry. He could not marry her and live a penniless existence so he left. He was not blind he could ell Emmy favored him and found it best to leave her and not lead her on.
Though Caleb was not blind to Emmy's feeling he was blind in many other ways. Everyone saw the fondness Emmy and Caleb had for each other and most of the house believed this fondness would lead to an engagement. Even Brandon, who knew Caleb's short attention span believed Caleb had finally found a girl who had tamed him, a girl who had at last made him want to settle down. And when Caleb took off before breakfast with only two lines to explain his actions it was Brandon who saw a crushed Emmy. After Caleb left Emmy was a changed girl. She sort of sulked around the house and she barely had an appetite. While she pretended to be all right it didn't take long for appearance to show the truth. Her eyes were red from crying and she hardly kept her hair in a perfect up do as she had been doing and her skin was pale from the heart ache she felt. She also barely made an appearance during the day until when Grandmother's rules dictated that she be present.
"Oh Mrs. Cromwell, I do wish I could something to cheer up Miss Emmy's spirit," Kathryn said nearly a week after Caleb had been gone.
"It is her first real heart break I don't think anything could cheer up her spirits."
"Stupid Caleb for leaving so abruptly if only he had given a proper goodbye or waited out the season maybe then-"
"I do not even think that would help Miss James. Emmy knew he was only here for a short time but the time he was her changed her world," Fiona looked over her daughter who had sunk down deep in her chair. "That is what first loves do no matter how long they last."
" Well if Caleb loves Emmy half as much as she seems to love him then I am sure no distance could separate them. I believe he will go clear up whatever problem has hit and be back in her arms," Kathryn said the words and wanted to believe them more than she actually did.
Perhaps they could reconcile in Boston Kathryn thought to herself, both Laurel and Emmy would be generously invited to the wedding. They are Nicholas' cousins and it would only make sense to have them at the wedding especially since Emmy has become a particular friend of mine, Kathryn thought. Yes that will be perfect, everyone knows weddings are a good place to meet your future mate or re-meet as the case may be.
Kathryn shared her thinking first with Nicholas, he did not seem enthused by the idea. He said that the Cromwell girls hardly traveled and were unlikely to travel for such a short time. But Kathryn casted off his negativity for he was a man who hardly thought of romantic ideals. So he kissed her forehead and told her he was happy doing anything that made her happy. Victoria agreed with Kathryn in stating they would of course be invited to the wedding but also agreed with Nicholas that the Cromwell girls probably wouldn't come. Kathryn did not think this to be true, of course they would come. Emmy would leap at the chance to see Caleb again. Everyone in the household except Julia believed Emmy and Caleb belonged together. A wedding would be perfect place to rekindle a love, everyone is more, so it was settled in Kathryn's mind.
"Boston?! Really?" Emmy cheered up, it was the first sign of happiness since Caleb had left two weeks ago.
"Of course you have to see Nicholas and I get married, we will be cousins."
"It sounds too good to be true."
"Well your mother still has to approve."
"Oh she will! She wanted to send us to Boston to stay with Aunt Iris?"
            "Another sister?"
"No Aunt Iris mother's dearest friends. She cared for us when father passed away. Her husband is Alfred Dumont."
            "Dumont?"
            "Do you know them?"
"By status only. They are just slightly above my social range and I have never met one of their children."
"They don't have any. Aunt Iris is always so kind to look at us Cromwell girls like her own daughters but believe me they rather have a son to pass on their estate to."
"Well with your mother's approval it seems like all we have to do is pack up your trunks, you are always welcomed to Boston."
"No we have to continue Laurel. she does not seem so thrilled with the idea of going to Boston and mother would not let me travel to Boston."
"Well how hard would it be to convince Laurel?"
"Pretty hard mother mentioned us going to Boston the night of the Taylor ball and she absolutely refused."
"Do no not worry I will think of a plan. I will make sure you get to Boston."

Emmy was so over joyed she threw her arms around Kathryn's neck.

"Oh Miss James you are too good to me."
            "Thank you Miss Emmy."

Emmy's joy was fast fleeting Kathryn was failing at her attempts to convince Laurel to come to Boston and Emmy felt she would never get to Boston. She thought she would die of a broken heart. Caleb had been gone for three weeks and he hadn't written anything not even to say he had arrived safely in New York. Emmy wanted to write him but he no address and heard her mother's voice in her head that said it was not right for the girl to write first. But if Caleb had left an address Emmy would have written despite what society said. She filled countless pages with words she had wanted to say about how much he missed him, how her heart ached every time she thought of him and she thought of him all the time. Everything  reminded her of him the sofa she used to love to sit in was the sofa he laid her in when he rescued her. Every time it rained she thought of him and the day she met him and her copy of Mansfield Park she was reading the day he found her in the woods she hadn't touched it since he left. She really hadn't done much of anything since he left except for sink deeper into sadness.

Probably the person who hurt more than Emmy was Fiona. She could do nothing for Emmy but watch her sink. Fiona knew there was nothing she could do for a broken heart, it was only a matter of time, but a  first love sticks with you always. It sticks with you because it is the first time you open your heart and it never really closes after that. Fiona knew this pain she still felt it a bit each day, sometimes that pain made it hard to get up in the morning and other days it barely struck her. But she knew the pain and as much as Fiona wanted to rescue Emmy from the pain she knew she couldn't. It is the hardship of being a mother, Fiona thought.

"Can I come in?" Fiona knocked on Laurel's door one night after everyone had went to bed.

"Of course mother. Is something the matter?"

"Yes. I am concerned about your sister Emmy, we all see her withering away and I know Miss James has tried to convince you to go to Boston but I would like you to consider it for Emmy's sake."

"Why? What good will it do?"

"A new scene, a new town, it might help distract her. I can't watch my daughter suffer so and think there is an option out there. You can stay with Aunt Iris and spend the days going out with Miss James, go to some partied or a ball and meet some more people."

"You just want her to run into Mr. James again."

"No, but would it be so bad if she did. I saw them together I believe he loves her, something must have happened to scare him."

"Mother we hardly know him. I don't know why you are throwing Emmy at him."

"I have to help my daughter, it is what mothers do."

"Like you helped me!" Laurel couldn't hold it in anymore.

"What? What do you mean?" Fiona said softly pulling herself closer to Laurel and placing her soft hands on Laurel's pulled up her knees.

"Mr. Foster went away and no one comforted me. We all hoped he would propose and when he went away and I get no sympathy, no trips talked about, nothing."
"Oh my dear I am sorry. You never seemed that hurt."

"I have a heart too and it breaks just as easily as Emmy's but no one notices because this whole household was too busy falling in love with Miss James and Mr. Caleb James. No one noticed my eyes were red because I cried every night for weeks. I carried, I carry a deep pain too but because everyone thinks of I am strong no one notices."

"Oh my dear girl," Fiona threw her arms around her daughter.

"No mother don't give me your sympathy now," like that Laurel had closed herself off again.

Fiona could sense it but she couldn't let go of her daughter. How could she have been so blind to her own daughter's suffering? How could she have been so ignorant of it all this time?

"All right mother as soon our family leave you can make the plans with Aunt Iris to send us off to Boston. Maybe it will be good both your daughters can forget about the men that broke our hearts this summer."

Fiona wanted to burst and cry out then but could tell her daughter would then but could tell her daughter would not receive it. So she wiped off the tears that get up and left. Before she left the room she looked back at Laurel who had straightened back out her legs and just stared at the book she had been reading.

"I am sorry I was so blind Laurel," Fiona whispered by in the quietness of the room Laurel could hear her.

"It is all right, I am strong remember."

Fiona closed the door but didn't move for awhile.

"Mother," Gloria's soft came out of the quietness like a soft bird chirp "is everything all right? I heard you and Laurel, you sounded sad."

"Everything is all right," she turned around looked at her youngest, though Gloria came to her shoulders she knelt down so Gloria had to look down to see into her eyes. "Promise me Gloria no matter how strong you are that you let me know when you are heartbroken."

"If you are not all right, please tell me."

            "Yes mother."

            "Promise me," Fiona's voice quivered.

            "Yes mother, I promise"."
"Thank you," Fiona threw her arms around her and pulled her close. She couldn't hold back her tears anymore and she unleashed them all on Gloria's shoulder.

"Mother are you sure you are all right."

"No," she said when she was able to speak again."But I will be."

Fiona stood up kissed Gloria's forehead and wished her a good night.

The Ball.

The instruments announced the first dance was about to begin and Nicholas was soon at Kathryn's side to have the first dance. Kathryn saw Emmy dancing with Caleb and Julia dancing with a man she had not been introduced to. When she asked Nicholas if knew the man, he reported it was Mr. John Melbourne. A good man but rather a bore, "poor Julia," he laughed. After a few minutes of dancing Kathryn saw Brandon taking the dance floor with Laurel. No one in Kathryn's acquaints looked particularly happy with their partner minus Emmy and Caleb. After the first dance Emmy was asked to dance by Patrick Castellan, a boy Emmy used to have a crush on but he paid no attention to her until tonight. But after that was the waltz and Brandon James was quick to arrive at her side before any other caller could arrive.
            "Hello Mr. James."
"Hello Miss Emmy, have you still kept this dance free for me?"
            "I have indeed."
"I am glad, it seems like everyman here wants your attention."
"It is amazing what a new dress and some hair styling has done." Emmy had been proper all night but since Brandon had proved himself such a dear friend she felt quite at ease. "No one in this town noticed me before tonight and now thanks to your sister everyone is whispering about me. It feels nice."
"My sister should not take the credit or your beauty."
            "But she should."
            "Why your beauty already existed."
"Mr. James, please don't go complimenting me. All night I have listened to false compliments and it has been such a bore do not ruin my night completely."
"I was not giving you any false compliments."
Emmy was embarrassed then by her inconsiderate words. "Oh Mr. James I am sorry. Until tonight I was invisible, no one noticed me, at least not for my looks, and now I am not sure how to handle it all. I guess I assumed everyone was being false to me."
"Even if they were, I would never be false to you. If you think that, then we clearly are not friends."
"Mr. James do not say that; can we not begin again? I promise this time I will take your compliment and be thankful."
"Perhaps you are right Miss Emmy I was being too forthright and I could see how could sound false."
"No Mr. James I was wrong, and now I have ruined this whole dance for us and the waltz is my favorite dance."
"It was not ruined for me Miss Emmy," he smiled at her.
They danced a little bit longer but then the song was over. Before Emmy could apologize once again for her words Caleb was at their side. He complimented their skill and joked at Brandon for not realizing how good of dancer he was. Caleb he said that he thought Brandon never danced at a ball because he couldn't. Brandon did not like the joking and made his excuses to walk away. Emmy wanted to go after him but Caleb held her back, he joked a bit more saying that Brandon had such sensitive feelings. Then Caleb swept her up in his arms and began dancing with her before she had a chance to be asked by someone else.
The rest of the night was pleasant. Fiona stayed mostly on the side lines of the ball and was overjoyed at the warm reception Emmy got. She also enjoyed everyone whispering about Emmy. Usually whispers were not good for a girls reputation but tonight everyone spoke favorable of Emmy Cromwell people were astonished how lady like she looked and acted. People whispered how it was like she had blossomed. And every one noticed how Caleb showed generous amounts of attention towards Emmy. Fiona smiled at those whispers but Laurel also overheard the whispers and shook her head over how flirtatious Emmy was being.
When Emmy was younger she would pace the floor and wait to hear Laurel's reports of the night. But now as she climbed into the motor coach she took a deep sigh of happiness thinking of all the stories she had to share. Everything about the night seemed like a dream, occasionally she would pinch herself to remind her it was real.
"You did very well my darling," Fiona said sitting in the coach as well.
            "Thank you mother."
"Everyone was talking about your poise, eloquence and beauty. The third one I knew well but even the first two were so well performed I was taken back I will admit."
"I owe everything to Miss James she has been a wonderful coach."
"Don't give her too much credit she was not talking for you or dancing for you."
"Thank you but I owe her so much."
"I found most of the night rather a bore," Laurel said climbing in.
"Oh Laurel, if you were so bored perhaps you should have danced more," Emmy said.
            "I care little for dancing."
"Laurel, I do wish you would cheer up. Perhaps Miss James is right?" Fiona said interrupting the little bicker between sisters.
            "Right about what?" Laurel asked.
"Perhaps you should go to Boston get a new environment."
"Oh mother that would be wonderful wouldn't it Laurel?" Emmy jumped up in her seat.
"Miss James was thinking of having you two come to Boston after her honeymoon but my dear friend Iris is always asking for you to visit. And this night is more proof that you two should go to Boston and have some fun there."
            "Oh it is wonderful."
"Well than it is set I should write to Iris and arrange a trip for you. Maybe a month or so?"
            "I don't know," Laurel sighed.
"Laurel, don't you want to go to Boston. Isn't Mr. Foster in Boston?" This would be a perfect chance to see him again.
"I do not prefer chasing after men Emmy."
"It is not a chase just lucky coincidence."
"Well no decisions have to made tonight but I think it would do you the world of good to see sights outside of Pine Haven. Both of you are old enough to travel by yourselves together," Fiona said. She silently questioned why Laurel didn't leap at the chance to go to Boston. Emmy was right Mr. Foster was in Boston so why did Laurel want to stay away. But Fiona knew not to ask any questions after she saw Laurel's face stricken with sadness when Emmy brought up his name.
That night Emmy hardly slept a wink she wanted to capture it all down in her journal before she forgot a single detail. Her feet ached from dancing but she hardly cared as long as they propped up she would manage.
The next morning her mother let her sleep in later than the normal breakfast hour but when she did make an appearance Gloria hounded her with questions. Emmy gave a vivid account of the whole evening from all the dresses to her partners and all the dresses to her partners and all gossips that floated around the dance floor. With each detail of silk embroidery or the use of feathers Gloria sighed with delight. With the talk of Emmy's partners of tantalizing gossip Gloria whined and wished she had been there. Emmy remembered what it was like to be in Gloria's shoes and promised her, her first ball would be just as wonderful. When Emmy and Gloria finally settled down Laurel was ready to move past the subject of this silly ball and with a huff said the ball wasn't even one of Mrs. Taylors  best but Gloria and Emmy hardly noticed her sour attitude. That day was pretty quiet as the household and most of the town rested from the Taylor ball.
